The First Day of School The first day of school can be a wonderful or terrifying event for both parents and children. We can do things to help us through this process. Talk to your child about if there is a special item (small enough to fit into their cubby) he or she would like to bring to school for comfort. The object will be left in the cubby for your child to go to and snuggle with (if necessary). Please bring a family photo to post in your child’s cubby so that they can look at it throughout the day (if necessary). Visit the playground at school so your child is familiar with the equipment and feels competent using it. Do some pretend play with your child about how you will go to school and how you will say goodbye. Imagine waking up, having breakfast, getting in the car, walking in the door, kissing/hugging goodbye. Agree on a goodbye ritual: how many kisses, hugs, etc. Make sure your child is clear about who will pick him up and when. Find out something about the schedule so you can talk it over with your child. Give a special note, picture, or poem for your child to keep in their cubby. We will also encourage your child to write a letter or draw a picture for you to make them feel better (if necessary). Make sure you awaken early enough to have a relaxing morning. Do not hang around at the door or peering through windows after you have said goodbye. Once your child sees that you are reluctant to leave, it is harder for them to feel safe and it is more difficult for the teachers to engage the child in classroom activities. BRING TISSUES! This may be harder for you than your child.

Last week the students had a great week with many family volunteers, Ms. Moore and Ms. D! I was even able to Facetime with each class at least once. The kids were so sweet and really made my day. The students were very busy enjoying the warm weather this week brought and engaging in the Three Little Pigs study. As the weather warms up, we will be spending more time outside working in the garden and exploring nature. Please make sure to dress your preschooler for the weather and with sunscreen on their bodies. I will have a bottle of sunscreen at school if you would like me to apply sunscreen to your student let me know. Next week we will transition into Spring, we will start our Lima Bean Observational Journals, which we will return to during the growth of our beans. We have continued our focus on community helpers and the preschoolers have loved every minute of it! We had a police officer visit us on Tuesday and the morning class had a fire fighter visit us on Thursday. Some pictures from the visits can be seen on the bulletin board.
Next week we will be continuing to discuss community helpers. If you would like to come in and share a little bit about your job please let us know so we can put you on our schedule. We have had a request for submarine diver, if anyone knows any. For small groups next week we will be creating mind maps about the helpers we have already learned about and creating representations of different numbers in our number museum. Updates:
We will have our third Parent and Child Activity on Friday, March 23rd from 9:30-10:30 in the school cafeteria. Remember that an adult must stay and cycle through the activities with their child. All students should attend this session. This is an excellent opportunity for you to see what your child can do and how you can help your student at home.
Spring Break is right around the corner! Our Spring Break will be from Monday, March 26th – Friday, March 30th. Field trip money is due Friday, March 16th. We will be seeing a performance of Knuffle Bunny at the Emerald City Theater on May 11. Next week we will be learning about Police Officers and Fire Fighters. Both classes voted on the job they were most interested in learning more about and these were the biggest vote getters. We will be reading books related to these two jobs and we will have a police officer and fire fighter come visit our class. For small groups we will be exploring how objects sink and float in water. The students will be doing observational drawings of what happens to the materials and our older children will try and write a word or two explaining what happened. Another group will be working on positional words by going through an obstacle course. Things you can do at home with your student: -Work on writing first and last name using both upper and lower case letters. -Read a book and have your children retell the story to you -Go on a walk with your child and point out how the seasons are starting to change -Count how many stairs you take to get home. Have a wonderful weekend, Ms. Weinberg and Ms. Moore |
