Upcoming events:
-Field Trip: Monday! We will see you at 9:00 on October 31! We will return at 12:00. Please be sure to feed your child a good breakfast and toilet them before walking into the classroom. If your child gets car sick, let the teacher know ASAP. This trip is outdoors, please dress your child appropriately. We beg that no student wears a costume because it easily can get dirty at the pumpkin patch. There are some very small rides and loose fabric (like capes) can make using the fun rides unsafe. -No School: Friday, November 4th and Friday, November 11th -Parent-Child Activity: We will have our first parent-child activity on November 10 from 9:15-10:30 in the cafeteria. This is a opportunity for you to experience some of the activities that students participate in at school. Many of these activities can be played at home to further their academic experience! We hope to see you there. There is will be no regular class on November 10th. -Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be held on November 9 and the afternoon of November 10. A sign up sheet will be posted soon. There is not regular scheduled school on these two days. Volunteers: The link below will send you to our volunteer sign up. We would love for parents to come in and help us in the classroom. You must be approved through CPS before helping in the classrooms. docs.google.com/document/d/1s6AC2psJgV69EaAl_4PLMWnJyOZPAa-1MSf6GW9CGB0/[email protected]&ts=58164b60&actionButton=1 New Assistant Teacher: Please welcome Kimberly Twilley to our class! The students call her Ms. Twilley. We are so excited to have her join us! She is currently working on her teaching certificate through the Grow Your Own teacher certification program. She is attending school at Northeastern. Donor's choose: I currently have a project on Donor's Choose, a website that helps teachers get materials for their classroom. Please consider making a donation. https://www.donorschoose.org/project/legos-for-learning/2284836/?rf=link-siteshare-2016-10-teacher-teacher_125593&challengeid=98309 Forms needed: We will be asking you to fill out a ASQ form in the next 2 weeks. PLEASE be sure to fill this out and return it the following day. Thanks!

Donor's choose: I currently have two projects on Donor's Choose a website that helps teachers get materials for their classroom. At the end of our pumpkin unit we will also be creating something called a Mind Map after our field trip. Children are given a topic (pumpkins) and instructed to think of pictures and important words that describe the topic. The children are then instructed to draw lines (so that people know that people know that pictures are connected to the topic). This graphic organizer helps children organize their thoughts through pictures and recalling comments. Our younger students (3 year olds) are only expected to a few pictures about what they remember about pumpkins while the staff does dictation. Our students who are heading to kindergarten next year, are expected to help sound out their words and create many detailed pictures about what they learned about pumpkins. Forms needed: We will be asking you to fill out a ASQ form in the next 2 weeks. PLEASE be sure to fill this out and return it the following day. Thanks!
Things of note: Picture Day: Monday, October 17, 2016. Please bring money with the child on Monday. Field Trip: We are going to Eden’s Place pumpkin patch on October 31st. We will depart Ray at 9:00 and return 12:00. There will be no afternoon class that day (October 31). Please turn your money and permission slip this week. We are asking for parent volunteers to ensure our trip is a safe success. Fall is here: The weather is changing, please be sure to dress your child appropriately. Our goal is to have students dress as independently as possible. This is how we have students put coats on at school. Please encourage your child to do this at home as well J This link is a great resource. http://kidsactivitiesblog.com/58500/kid-hacks We will hopefully have a new assistant teacher starting this week! As soon as we know for sure when she will be starting we will let you know and give you an introduction. What are we going to be learning about this week: We will be finishing up our study of apples this week. On Tuesday we will make applesauce. The students will help with the preparation and learn sequencing skills while we have fun making delicious applesauce. Be sure to ask your preschooler what we did first, second and last when we cooked. Later in the week we will study leaves and how they change in the fall. On your way to and from school please talk with your student about the changes they notice. Please make sure you check the CPS website and your local news over the holiday weekend for updates regarding the teachers strike.
Also do not forget, if you are not in Ray boundaries you will not get into Ray for kindergarten unless you go through the lottery process. Please get on the CPS access and enrollment website to sign up your child. We love seeing our pre-k students year after year, but for this to happen you must go through the lottery process! Selective Enrollment started October 3rd. If you are NOT in district and you are going to Kindergarten (Five by September 1, 2017) next year you MUST apply to come to Ray next year. Please check thecps.edu/AccessAndEnrollment/Pages/Apply.aspx to register! Our pre-k curriculum is often driven by student interest, and often year after year students are interested in similar things. 3 year old students often experience these themes only on the surface. During the 3 year old year, our goal is to help students function, attend, interact and play with independence. When studying a theme, many 3 year old’s background knowledge is more limited (due to having less years on this plant) and they are only getting simple facts about the topic of study. 4 year old students typically come into a theme with a broader level of background knowledge. This allows me to help them target what else they want to learn about and dive deeper into during the theme. This is one reason we use KWL charts (Know, What to Learn and Learned) with the class. Together we decide what direction we want our learning to go in. With second year students we do more research and encourage students to use the books (with teacher assistance) to find facts and explore them more deeply. We encourage second year students to use more of their own writing (inventive spelling) and also to draw and diagram in more detail. Basically, themes may be similar from year to year, but what students get out of those these is drastically different when they are 3 to when they are 4. Special activities you can do over the long holiday weekend: Each student was sent home with a packet of work. These are examples of activities that you can do with your child. The names written in yellow are meant to be traced. Other things you can do include, visiting local museums, go on a nature walk and observe the changes occurring during the fall, see how many times in a day you can find the first letter of your name. Next week, we will be beginning our study on all things fall. We will start with apples. We will be reading about apples, dissecting apples, tasting apples and ending the week making applesauce. You can help our study along by trying different kinds of apples at your house. Have a wonderful long weekend, Ms. Weinberg Another great week has gone by! This upcoming week we will finish up our All About Me Project. We will finish up our family portraits and graphs. We will finish reading the Todd Parr books about family and read different books about how families show love including, Honey, I Love You and So Much.
This week will also discuss how to solve our social problems by finding a new friend. Sometimes when our friends are hurtful they best way to solve the problem is to find someone else to play with. We will read the book, The Recess Queen and Enemy Pie. This will be a skill that the students will need a lot of help practicing. In the upcoming weeks we will be studying apples, pumpkins and gourds. Please help us to collect cool looking gourds for our study. If you spot one at your local grocery store or when you are out apple/pumpkin picking with your family please bring it in to share with the class. We will conclude our study with a trip to Eden’s Nature Center on Monday, October 31st. We will need 6 parent chaperones for each classroom. I have attached the field trip chaperone expectation sheet at the bottom of the blog. Please look it over so that you are aware of the expectations. Please keep an eye out for the detailed field trip form by the sign in sheet. Please be sure you are dropping off and picking up on time. When students are late for drop off they miss some of the most important instructional time of the day. In the morning, student write their name and journal. While journaling we work on inventive spelling and phonemic awareness skills. If students miss this on a daily basis they will not be prepared for the rigors of kindergarten. Also we ask you to please be on time for pick up. If you are late your child will be brought to emergency aftercare where paid staff member watches students after school hours. Here is the Ray late pick-up policy: If a student is picked up late once the guardian will receive a warning, twice they will have to speak with an administrator and three times they will need to pay $25 and will receive written correspondence outlining legal requirements. FIELD TRIP VOLUNTEERS Parent participation is essential in ensuring that our preschool children have appropriate field trip experiences. We highly appreciate parents who are able to assist us on our outings! We want to thank all of the parents who will be assisting us on our trips in advance! On field trips we ask that parents supervise their child along with a small group of other children. We ask that you follow all safety rules and abide by the set schedule especially for meal and departure times. We ask that you assist in buckling all students into and out of their seat belts. We ask that you buddy up with another adult to take children to the bathroom (if needed). We also ask that parents do not take part in any extra activities that are not included in the pre-planned field trip (i.e. going to any show/exhibit/performance that is an extra cost, or purchase treats or toys at souvenir shops). We have children with food allergies and it could be potentially dangerous to partake in treats/food made with unknown ingredients. Thank You, Ray Preschool Staff |
