It was a very close race between a guppy and a goldfish. The Goldfish won! We will have the goldfish move into our classroom next Monday. This week we are setting up the habitat and learning what we need to do to care for our pet goldfish.
This week we will also begin to learn about fruits, vegetables, seeds and plants. We are excited to begin implementing our Garden Bites curriculum in April. This program will allow the children to make their own healthy foods using local ingredients! Week of the Young Child: Get Ready for WOYC! Have a great week, Ms. Weinberg and Ms. Moore Dear Families:
Thank you to all our wonderful parent volunteers! We had a great time at the Children’s Museum on Friday and could not have done it without your help. This week we will beginning a project on fish. We will be learning as much as we can about them and even getting a fish for our classroom so we can have first hand knowledge. We started today by reading the book, Memoirs of a Goldfish. We also started a web of information that we already know about Fish. This week we will be learning about different kinds of fish that we can have as pets and discussing their habitats. Please feel free to share any books you have about fish or any fish supplies you might have laying around at home. OUTSIDE TIME: The weather has been a roller coaster of cold and warm! This past week we started to dive into our study of the Three Little Pigs. The preschoolers are loving all of the different versions and have been discussing what makes a sturdy house. This upcoming week we will be making milk cartoon houses. The preschoolers will pick what material they want their house to be and then they will decorate their house. We will also be using blocks to make sturdy and safe houses. We will be using team work to build our houses and then we will see if they will stand up to our very strong wind machine (a fan). Additionally, we will be using wikisticks to make letters and we will be creating groups of five for our five museum.
Outside Play: Playing outside is part of our daily curriculum. We will go outside everyday that the weather allows. Unless we have a doctor's note stating that your child needs to stay in for a medical reason we will be taking your child outside. Field Trip Volunteers: We will only be able to take volunteers that have cleared their background check in time for the filed trip. If you have not received an email from CPS stating that you have been cleared we can not have you join us. Upcoming Events:
Thanks, Ms. Weinberg and Ms. Moore Dear Families:
Thank you to everyone who has brought in supply donations!! We appreciate it very much! This past week we began our study of the Three Little Pigs. We read a couple of the books and began to talk about what makes a strong house. We also attended The African American History Assembly. The children loved to hear the music and poems and watching the dancing. Last Friday, I went to kids yoga training. Already I have incorporated many of the mindfulness activities I learned. Today, instead of reading the Three Little Pigs we used yoga poses to hear the story and see it take shape. Additionally, we have focused on using our breath to calm our bodies and being more aware of our breath. I am really looking forward to adding more yoga into our day. Upcoming Events: Friday, March 15th– Field trip to the Chicago Children’s Museum Last week we were very busy relearning our classroom rules and expectations. We were introduced to our two classroom puppets that will be helping us learn how to be kind to one another and how to listen in class. Last week, Becky and Bobby helped us learn our listening rules:
1) watching eyes 2) listening ears 3)voices quiet 4) body calm Ask your student to show the movements we use to remember the listening rules. This week we will be starting our Three Little Pigs building theme. We will be reading many different versions of the Three Pigs and discussing what makes a strong house. Our students have been master builders all year and this will focus our building. Please donate any found objects you have at home to help with our building unit. We could use: paper towel rolls, small boxes, corks, Pringles containers and anything else you think would be fun to build with. We hope everyone enjoyed the 3 books their child picked out from the My Very Own Library (MVOL) Scholastic Book fair! If you are looking to extend your reading experience with your child, they can draw their favorite part of the story and write why that was their favorite part and if they would recommend the book to someone else- then your child can bring their book review back to school to share with the class! Upcoming Events: Friday, March 15th- Field trip to the Chicago Children’s Museum– Money is due Friday, March 1st Have a great week, Ms. Weinberg and Ms. Weinberg This week we are pressing pause to review the expectations of each area of the classroom and how we use classroom materials. In addition, we will be reviewing our classroom community. This is important for us to ensure we have a successful rest of the school year.
Please help us out! We are busy bees and we go through supplies very quickly. We are in need of:

Upcoming Events: Friday, March 1st- Field Trip Money and Form Due Friday, March 15th– Field trip to the Chicago Children’s Museum Have a great week, Ms. Weinberg & Ms. Moore This week we will be continuing our discussion of winter and how animals act in the winter. We will start the week by reading the book, "Bear Snores On" by Karma Wilson. We will continue to use this book throughout the week to discuss different habits of animals. Additionally, we will read some non-fiction books about animal behavior.
Valentine's Day- Thursday February 14th To celebrate Valentine's day we will have a fun filled day making friendship bracelets, friendship paintings and reading the story Love Monster! If your child wishes to give out valentines to their classmates we are asking that you DO NOT ADDRESS the valentines to individual children. It is too hectic and time consuming to assist 20 children in searching for 20 different names and placing the correct cards in the correct bags. You can simply have your child sign (with your assistance if necessary) his or her name to the cards. If the cards need to be assembled (for example if the card needs to have an eraser or lollipop attached- please attach before you bring them in). If you would like to send a sweet or savory treat we require that all items are individually wrapped and store bought (no homemade items are allowed). We are also a nut, egg, and fish/shellfish free classroom. Please DO NOT bring any treats containing any of the above mentioned items. We also highly recommend small non-edible valentine gifts (erasers, stickers, and pencils are all great!) As always participation is optional. Late Pick-Up We sent home a letter in the mailboxes about late pick-up and will strictly be following this policy this semester. Please note that school ends at 3:45pm. If your child has not been picked up by 4:00 pm, they will be waiting in the main office. The letter is attached below. Thank you for your understanding! Upcoming Events:
Dear Families: We hope everyone stayed warm during the polar vortex! We are excited to resume classes and get back into a full week of learning! Last week we had so much for digging into snow and the winter weather. We will continue to talk about the Winter and begin to discuss how animals react to the wintery weather as well. We will use language such as migration and hibernation. During small groups we are going to be trying out some new dynamic grouping to help each reach each student at their own level. Students will be doing different independent activities and will be called over to work with the teachers when it is their turn. OUTSIDE TIME: Please remember that we will most likely go outdoors if the weather is appropriate. Please remember to send appropriate winter gear, so that the children can warmly explore outdoors during the long winter months. Mittens are awesome for preschoolers! They keep their hands warm and are easier for young children to put on. If mittens are an option for you please send your child in with them. Upcoming Events: Monday, February 18th- No School Have a great week, Ms. Weinberg and Ms. Moore Last week we had fun exploring maps! The preschoolers where not as into the idea of maps are much preferred pathways and mazes. Therefore, we will be moving on to discuss keeping our bodies healthy. The preschoolers have been enjoying our doctors office in the kitchen area and are very interested in giving "shots." This week we will be talking about healthy habits and remaining healthy when we are stuck inside.
For small groups, the preschoolers will be doing an experiment with germs and watching how they spread. We will also be exploring the angles and sides of shapes and sorting healthy foods verse unhealthy foods. I want to make sure my students have the materials and experiences they need to succeed, so I just created a request for my classroom at DonorsChoose.org: Art Supplies for Crafty Kids P.S. If you know anyone who may want to help my classroom, please pass this along! Please remember that we will most likely go outdoors if the weather is appropriate. Please remember to send appropriate winter gear, so that the children can warmly explore outdoors during the long winter months. If anyone has any gently used winter gear (hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots) and they would like to donate them we would really appreciate it. Mittens are awesome for preschoolers!
